Oregano
Oregano - also often referred to as wild marjoram and Mexican sage - is an herb that is a member of the mint family. This herb is most often used as a seasoning although it has a range of cooking and medicinal uses. Oil from this herb is also found in various cosmetics.
Oregano in cooking
Oregano is best known as a seasoning in different kinds of foods including sauces, stews and sausages, for example. The herb (as Mexican sage) is used for many Mexican dishes and is also commonly added to salads, vegetables, meat, shellfish, cheese fish and soups. This is a commonly used herb in Mediterranean (i.e. Italian and Greek) cooking - it complements tomatoes extremely well and is often used for pasta sauces and as a pizza topping. The herb is also often used to flavour olive oils and vinegars.
Oregano in medicine
Oregano has a range of useful medicinal purposes as it is rich in antioxidants, phenolic acids and flavonoids and can have antiseptic effects. It is used by many practitioners of alternative medicines to help with:
